The Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec

Currently, the interoceanic corridor is more real thanks to the CG Railway (CGR) company, which created a Ferro-Ship specially designed to transport up to 135 railroad cars from the East Coast of the United States to the Port of Coatzacoalcos. This Ferro Vessel travels under the name "Cherokee"

The director of the CG Railway (CGR) company explains that the easiest way to understand this Ferro-Ship is to see it as a train that runs on water, totally built to move rail cars.

The Cherokee already had its first adventure departing from the port of Mobile, Alabama, on September 12, transporting 122 wagons and arriving at the port of Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, on September 15, 2021. The ship began its return trip from Coatzacoalcos on September 18 with 130 cars on board, docking at Mobile 3 days later.

Mexico has spent more than 50 years trying to develop an alternative to the Panama Canal with a 'dry canal' that would connect by rail the narrowest strip in Mexico between the ports of Salinas Cruz in Oaxaca and the port of Coatzacoalcos in Veracruz. This strip is known as the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and consists of 302 kilometers long that allow joining the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean in just 24 hours of transit.

This ambitious project places Mexico as a strategic logistics center that connects America, South America, Asia and Europe.

The so-called Interoceanic Corridor is being promoted by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, although as we already mentioned, this ambitious project has been promoted by previous presidents for more than 50 years, starting with Luis Echeverría Álvarez.

What is wonderful and at the same time complex about this project is that it unites 76 municipalities from both Veracruz and Oaxaca. To add flavor, only 30% of the municipalities that correspond to the part of Oaxaca have Internet access.

Many of these municipalities are controlled by ejidatarios and have local authorities. To reach an agreement, Community Assemblies have to be called and the majority has to vote in favor so that it can continue. By the way, everything is being done in the most transparent and clear way. They even have minutes of assembly and taking of signatures. Additionally, following the standards of international law, an indigenous assembly must be held to respect their increasingly well-known rights.

One of the key steps for this project to continue was the creation of the Decentralized public body "Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec" because it has a Director who has to show the results and progress of the project to the interested parties.

The investment includes the rehabilitation of the Salinas Cruz and Coatzacoalcos along with the roads that connect them (A large part of the roads belong to the state and another large part belongs to the private company Ferrosur, the latter is showing a lot of support for the project).

At the same time, with this new development pole for well-being, roads, industrial parks, schools to train qualified labor, hospitals, and even tourism will be encouraged because the Interoceanic Corridor will not only be used to transport cargo/merchandise, but it will also be for passengers and will connect with the Mayan Train project that together will resurrect the south of Mexico, turning it into a new world of opportunities and magic.

It is a good time to invest in the areas surrounding the Interoceanic Corridor (Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca)

Mexico is, after Chile, the second largest Latin American user of the Panama Canal. Mexico uses the Canal for its shipments to the United States, also for the transport of raw materials from the Pacific basin of South America to its territory, so the new corridor will allow Mexico not only to save money, but also to generate wealth.

The entire Isthmus project will be in charge of a company under the custody of the Secretary of the Navy so that the nation's assets are not transferred or delivered to individuals. The profits of the company will be used to pay pensions for the armed forces and workers in the service of the State.
